Torchwood: Children of Earth -- More thoughts on Day Four
More about Day Four and speculations for Day Five. Commenting to the other post later. I'm going to attempt to go back to sleep for a few hours.
Ugh. Just ugh.
Still feel gutted. Still just feel... empty. To those of you I talked to last night and just helped? Thank you. ♥ I know we're all in the same place right now.
Logically? I know this is a TV show and he's not real. Yes, totally aware. But the acting of everyone is what made them real. The grittiness of the first two series made it feel as if this COULD be going on right now and we don't even know it. That was why it was so appealing.
Yes, I know I got into Torchwood late. I had my reasons because someone I know ruined Who for me and I had no desire to get into something they liked. While working at WP$E, a girl there liked TW so I started watching at either "Meat" or "To the Last Man" and was hooked. Tosh's and Owen's deaths were horrible and I can only watch "Exit Wounds" on a rare occurrence because their deaths kill me.
I was attached to Tosh. Owen not so much because of my love for Ianto -- but still. Owen's final moments kill me every time I watch it.
But to lose Ianto? Just... no.
I write fanfic. I get inside character's heads. Any good writer does that -- knows their headspace. Jack is my favourite character and he will always be so. And, frankly, I watched torchwood for a LOT more than the Janto relationship. Won't lie but it was a big draw for me -- but I could have been happy existing off the subtext. But there was something in the way their relationship was crafted. The fact that we were never beaten over the head with them. They simply were a couple and you saw the progression. If you want to go so far as to compare Ianto and Rose, the Doctor has said that Rose made him a better person. In the same way, Ianto made Jack a better person.
Ianto was the humour in the show. His dry, sarcastic, and snarky wit was what was able to break up tense scenarios.

Need I say more?
As for Day Five, until the credits roll, I'm not giving up hope. Hell, until we get through the Doctor Who specials and if there's a Series 4, I'm not giving up hope. Because this is Sci-Fi and anything can happen. There's that giant reset button in the corner. Or any number of ways he can be brought back.
I haven't seen anyone going on and on about what day 5 is supposed to bring. It's like everyone has stopped at Day Four. And Jack going off into space? If they killed Ianto just to cut Jack's ties with Cardiff that was BS. If the Doctor's in trouble, Jack will go to him, ties or not. Let us point to Journey's End. Jack went with the Doctor and left Gwen and Ianto behind. He said he was coming back and you know the two know he will always come back. Jack's loyalty is split between Cardiff and the Doctor. But the two can exist together.
The vague hope is that they were bogus DVDs sent to gut us all and boost the viewing numbers. Seeing them get so many people to tune in is fabulous. And I know while I'd like to say I'd never watch Torchwood again, I know I will -- though if there's no Jack in it again? I'm done. I'm sorry, I like Gwen and I'm not bashing her, but she was never a draw for me.
SPECULATIONS
I know I listed a bunch of them last night but the thing that keeps getting to me is how Jack came back... that quiet breath in of air rather than the large gasp of life. Correct me if I'm wrong but the only other time we've seen Jack wake quietly is when his life force has been screwed with -- aka, Abaddon. If that kiss at the end was Jack giving Ianto his life force, dying -- it could take longer for Ianto to wake as in Cyberwoman, Ianto was supposed to be dead when he got that kiss-of-life, yes?
While txting with Kris for the majority of the night and her watching said ending before me, my first thought was that it was due to Jack not really wanting to come back, knowing that he'd be looking at the body of his lover. Him clinging to Gwen and just staring at Ianto will forever be burned in my mind -- second behind that chaste kiss when Ianto passed.
However.
What if it's something else. the virus that was released into the air was meant to create a state like death as a way for the 456 to show they were serious about getting the kids. Make it look like a bunch of people died so they get what they want.
For Jack -- it would only work for so long as through the novels Jack has mentioned that depending on the poison depends on how quickly he can metabolise it. Something like that would be metabolised quickly -- but ordinary humans would last until the 456 wanted to wake them.
I will say? I think we're about to get Vengeful God Jack -- and I'm not sure which is scarier. Jack or Ten in the Vengeful God mode. Jack, I think, is about to go places we've never seen him go. As a Jack!RPer, I can't wait to see it.
And what about Mr Hazmat suit? He breathed the air and we see him up and about in Day 5. Was that something for the more observant fans to cling to?
I'm just hoping. Right now, I'll take any explanation that brings him back. And, you know, while we're at it? Let's bring back Tosh and Owen too. All five of them can hold hands and walk off into the sunset of Parallel-World!Torchwood. Rose got her 10.5 in a parallel world, why can't Jack get his Ianto in one?
Best thing? I got today off with my birthday tomorrow. And I can't friggin' sleep. *sigh* Thank you, Auntie Beeb for my birthday present.
Only, y'know. Not.

That said, I would love one of your theories to be right. Despite what I said and still kinda feel about it ruining the emotional impact, done right it could be fabulous. Either the fake-out or, omg (and my heart flutters at the thought) Jack's kiss somehow keeping him alive? Except, he was all pale, and looked pretty damn dead.
AH I DON'T KNOW!
Also, I totally watched Torchwood just for Jack, he's been my favourite character of that whole universe ever since he waltzed onto screen in DW. Jack/Ianto totally stole my heart though.. and, ya, there is no Torchwood without Jack. Honestly, if it really is down to just Jack and Gwen then I would suspect there won't be a series 4. I mean, that's 2/5 cast members left and a series 4 would just be... so different. Wrong, somehow. I didn't like Owen (until he was Zombified, that's when he finally grew on me) and I liked Tosh alright, but regardless of my attachment to the characters, it's not the same show with so many of them gone. Losing one or two at a time, then filling the empty spots for a while before losing more, that works, but not so many all at once.

I think Jack will have other things to make him super dramatic, in fact, with Ianto dying in episode 4, RTD even make sure it wouldn't have a lasting effect on viewers. It wasn't a definitive moment, the heart of the battle, it was nothing. Whatever happens today will make people who aren't fans about Ianto.
