Fans that get angry at writers like that just make me want to bitch-slap them all, and then hug the poor writer.

The only time I think it's every justified to be mad at a writer is if they write badly - and by which I mean OOC and plot holes and the like. I say this because the only time I've ever gotten truly mad at writers was for this last season of Heroes, in which they did a horrible job with plot and characterization.

I am a rather rabid Heroes fan, and it hurt like fuck to see it happen to my show, but aside from deciding that the writing team is mostly crap, I could never imagine ATTACKING them. I can see leaving messages saying in a calm, respectful way, why you think they've fucked it up, but I've seen people expressing the thoughts that I imagine got shot at James, and I think it's absolutely horrible. Being a fan of something means you can feel joy and sadness, and at times betrayed, but it's just not such a big deal that attacks like that are ever, EVER justified.
