Oh god, I've been so terrified since HBP that Remus isn't going to survive the last book. I've had that same sinking feeling, to the point where I've been 99% sure that he won't live, but where I'm just wishing that he'll make it through.
As far as the ending goes... since this is a children's book, though, I see no fade to black coming. I see a final ending, one way or another.
