Half Blood Prince - Thoughts

Well, my desktop looks so empty minus the MuggleNet countdown ticker. Sad not to see it anymore, but I'm happier having my book in hand.
Open thoughts: OMG. Amazing. Loved it so much more than OotP. My thoughts and theories will come later after I've thought a little more and haven't really flown through the book. Finished reading at about 5pm tonight. Couldn't read constantly as I had family stuff today but total reading time was under 7 hours. Not too shabby if I do say so myself.
The one cool thing though... I was number 2 to get my book at Barnes & Noble... the first one to actually buy it as the little kid before me won a deluxe edition. Got interviewed by the news and everything. Me as a 21 year old in HP getup and everything.
Highlight of the night. *g*
My thoughts, and they'll be bulleted as I'm still going "OMG WHEEE!"
- First of all, I loved Harry in this. For as annoying as I thought he was last time, he's that much "better".
- The muses were a tad upset by the ships and I'm wondering what turns fandom will take as a result. Hopefully we'll continue on much the same, but we shall see. I'm not giving up my pups or Bill/Tonks... no matter what.
- Loved the pensieve plot device. It was a great way to get back into the past and see everything from Tom's history. And the horcruxes...? OMG. Brilliant. My mouth hung open that entire chapter. Same with the news of learning when Voldie applied for the DADA post that no one has stayed there longer than a year since.
- Which brings up Snape as DADA prof. Thought he would get the position for Harry's final year and as it turns out, it is his final year. So I wonder if we get eight books out of this. One year for him running around to destroy the horcruxes and an eighth for him to finish Hogwarts. Assuming he survives that is...
- New characters were fun and not as annoying as Umbitch. Whoops. Ignore that slip of the text.
- Harry getting the magical creature. Yeah, we all knew he was getting Buckbeak. Where was the fun in that? And she seems to be setting up that Sirius is *sniff* dead. Okay... I'll still hold onto a small thread of hope. Small... very, very small.
- I thought it would be Dumbledore who would get the axe in this book. It just seemed... predictable. Though Snape was a surprise. Some theories on that which, after talking to my gang... I may write up for later.
That's all I can think of right now. I'm still in an OMG mode. Huzzah.
Now... how long will we have to wait for the final one...?

Date: 2005-07-17 07:01 am (UTC)I must say, given how you reacted to OotP *gestures to the infamous dent* I'm proud of you for being so sensible about this book. Had I finished it before you, I would have expected a raging IM from you. But I'm quite tired so I forget that you're not a complete MORON like some other shippers. *rolls eyes* Check my LJ later, will you? I'm sure it'll be flame ridden from the Wolfstar shippers I insulted when I called them complete and utter morons.
Seriously, Wolfstar is still perfectly plausible. And even if it isn't, get over the damn battlecry and move on with your life. Honestly.
Snape... Read the LJ. I have no more words for how much I loathe him.
Also, I'm annoyed with Sirius. See LJ.
But yes, all in all, this book was surprising, though not as surprising as others have been. The Snape as DADA and Hogwarts closing (seems rather inevitable. When Harry didn't suddenly speak up in McG's office to say he would return if no one else would, I knew it would close) took me off guard, but I did call Remus/Tonks even before you slipped Lia. XD So, no fretting.
And as for Remus/Tonks... I've always loathed shipping wars. Just let people have sex for God's sake. Honestly.

Date: 2005-07-17 08:08 pm (UTC)I am going with the Snape was asked by AD to do it. Pg 503 in the American edition, "Marvolo's ring. And a terrible curse there was upon it too...and for Professor Snape's timely action when I returned to Hogwarts, desperately injured, I might not have lived to tell the tale." I am willing to bet, the curse, whatever it was, was supposed to be fatal. When HP and AD are in the cave and AD is drinking the stuff, he begs HP to kill him, to end his pain. AD knew he was dying. AD knew he was dying and Snape knew too before Snape ever made the unbreakable vow. I am willing to bet the hatred and revulsion on Snape's face was aimed at himself, not at AD.

Date: 2005-07-18 07:55 pm (UTC)I'm still thinking they'd need to bring Sirius back. So I'll leave that there.
And everyone else seems to have gotten the R.A.B. and the sixth Horcrux.
Opposite of a Horcrux is . . . a life debt. And how many has Harry collected? Whee!
P.S. What are you doing the twenty-ninth?

Uhh... I dunno. Why?
