Wow, I haven't actually logged into this thing in... I don't know how long. I don't know how many of you are still around these parts but... *wave?*

Basically, seeing so many people talking about Harry Potter's 20th Anniversary had me thinking about my beginnings and fandom. The friends I made, how I grew as a writer. I know there are a lot of you that I still speak to outside of the LJ community and I think it's a real testament to how pervasive fandom is and how it truly does connect all of us. That so many of us grew beyond the pseudonyms and let each other into our lives.

Harry Potter did that for us. It was a common ground. It let those of us who were weirdos in our own little world find other weirdos and realize... we weren't that weird after all. That we had people. That we weren't alone in the world. For some of us who were unpopular in school, it was such a refuge.

As Harry Potter turned to Torchwood/Doctor Who (for me any way), it brought me to meet a whole new host of people. To meet creators that eight-year-old me could never have expected I would be friends with writers and actors and costume designers. To actually KNOW people who put shows on TV and write movies and comics. To count some of them among my closest friends. It's quite a feeling really.

I've spent most of my day re-watching Torchwood while working my day job. Missing my first ever cosplay and the people I met because of it. Missing RP because god knows I don't actually have time to write when the aforementioned day job runs me ragged.

So today turned into revisiting fandoms and nostalgia and all sorts of other good things. So if any of you felt that same wave of nostalgia and decided to come back to LJ today... please say hi. I know I've missed you all. ♥
thescarletwoman: (TV // TW :: Coffee Elitist)
Right. So more tie-in books were just announced today and I find myself getting more and more pissed off about things as it comes down the pike. I'm also tired of having to explain to people that the fact that Ianto's dead and not coming back is not the reason why I'm not looking forward to Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Unpopular opinions ahead.

I have a LOT of reasons.

One of which is my own, and something I don't want to/am not really allowed to talk about. Sorry to be the douche who says that, but still. X)

One of the other reasons has to do with the shift in production staff. I'm sorry, but I like Ray's designs and of what I've seen of fan production shots? I'm really pissed off about the coat. Like, a lot. But that's the costumer/cosplayer in me.

Another of the reasons is that the American cast is beginning to outweigh the British cast. I don't like it being set in the US. The heart and soul of Torchwood is in the UK and is in Cardiff. That's where it will always exist for me.

But the main reason why I'm upset about this is the change in tone of the series. Series one and two were all about the camp. It was fun SciFi that didn't take itself too seriously. It was just fun. You watched it, there were some real nail-biter episodes, but at the end of the day, the team stood together as they beat the bad guys/aliens/bad things/whatever. They may have been bruised and beaten, but they were together.

Maybe that's just me, but I don't want realism in my SciFi. SciFi is meant to be my escape. I'm a law student who is specialising in criminal law/international law. I spend my days reading about rape, torture, war crimes, murder, etc. At the end of the day, I want to come home, put my feet up and escape somewhere else. I don't want to turn on Torchwood and see the same world I just left behind in my law books. I want the fantasy. I want the team that survives against the odds and are together at the end of the day even if they shouldn't.

I don't want to watch a show where I'm afraid to start liking any of the characters for fear they're going to die off as soon as I like them. This doesn't apply to Ianto. It applies to Tosh and Owen as well. It applies to Rhys (who I'm certain has a big-ole Bullseye painted on his forehead right now). I want to be able to root for the good guys and know they'll be there at the end of the day and I can celebrate their victory.

That's why I'm not looking forward to Miracle Day. I will watch it for John and for Jack -- because I need to know. But if I can't stand it after an episode, I will turn it off with the knowledge that the Torchwood I know and love died a valliant death after the second series. I'll have the audio books and the tie-in novels and the radio plays to keep me company. And know that whatever comes after this point is no longer Torchwood, but this show that masquerades as it by being this high drama with a bit of SciFi thrown in as an afterthought.

I'm not turning off comments on this so I'm hoping there will be civility in the comments. Feel free to agree or disagree with me but be civil about it.
thescarletwoman: (TV // TW :: Jack Good Looking)
So this is a post that's slightly late in coming, simply because I've had other things on my mind. Like, y'know, finals. But it's still something I want to talk about that's fairly timeless.

Cosplay and Crossplay.

About a week ago, [livejournal.com profile] avengangle poked me about a post she had seen on one of the blogs she frequents. If you're curious, this is the link. As a warning, it's a couple weeks old and, well, they can be a little scary over there as well. So I don't really recommend commenting on anything. Just my bit of a fore-warning.

The gist of the post was talking about cosplaying and should people of different races/genders play certain characters. The main ones talked about? If a white girl should be able to cosplay roles like Martha, Toshiko or Inara. Well, needless to say I had a few things to say about it. The following is what I posted in response:

I'm actually the female Jack that avenging_angle referred to up a few comments back. I just wanted to pop in with a few things at least from my friends who all cosplay in the whofandom.

I can't speak on the issue of race as I, personally, haven't seen many Martha/Mickey cosplayers. I do know a Tosh cosplayer and she is of Asian descent.

I've cosplayed (and a term that's been coined in fandom is crossplay when dressing up as someone as the opposite gender) at several cons. I wish I had gone to the panel at last year's Gallifrey (con in LA) that actual dealt with the notion of crossplay as it's become more prevalent in the fandom.

I have a group of friends (all female) who cosplay. There are three Jacks, four Iantos, several Doctors and an Owen. For us? It's more about playing the character you're dressing up with, not choosing to identify with one gender or another. Some of us go very far in portraying authenticity in our costumes (to binding or wearing wigs), others just wear the clothes. I know, for me, when I put the costume on, I'm 'Jack'. It's a bit like an exercise in theatre improv. With us, and a lot of others, it's about the attributes other than race or gender--do you identify with the character? Go for it. But my group is all cis-women playing white men. It's not choosing based on race/gender (or being limited to choosing a character who matches your race/gender), but on who you identify with as a character and want to play. But like I said, we find it to be character driven as opposed to gender driven.

I also know of several people who have done femme versions of male characters. Mostly I've seen femme versions of the Third, Fifth, Tenth and Eleventh incarnations. But they take the base design of the costume and make it more stereotypically feminine. Use of corsets is generally found, I will say.

Also, you might like to know that the costume designers do love seeing people dressing up, no matter the gender. I've had a chance to meet both Ray Holman (who designed for Torchwood and the current season of Doctor Who) and Louise Paige (who designed for the Tenant years). Louise I met at Gallifrey as one of the guests and I know she loved seeing people dressed up in her designs. I personally got a glare because I wasn't wearing one of her designs but that's utterly beside the point. I met Ray a few weeks at the BBCamerica permiere of Eleventh Hour. He sought me out because I was dressed as Jack and wanted to get my picture. He later told me that he had wanted to get pictures of the group of us who had dressed (we had Ten, Amy, Femme!Eleven, Rose and me) but didn't have the chance to. The costume designers are all about seeing people in their designs.

So just a few thoughts from one who does cosplay someone of a different gender. :^)

I'm sad I never got any comments, but it did, however, feel good to get that off my chest.

SQUEEEE!

I thought breaks were supposed to be, y'know, a break!

Catching up with comments to the reaction post when I get home tonight. ♥ And also -- while belated, I have a TW christmas fic. And two others in the works. What can I say, EoT didn't kill my muse but really boosted him.

But the BIIIIIIG thing! I am going to Gallifrey 21! I'm SO exceedingly excited, particularly as this is my first time to California. I know some of you are going, and some of you I'm rooming with. *cough*

BUT! I definitely want to meet up with folks who are there and just have a grand old time of it. ♥

My flight plans: Going on Wed right after class (17:18 flight, gets in at 23:00); leave on sunday morning (9:50 flight, gets in at 21:02). So if you want to meet up, drop me a line and we can figure it out, exchange mobiles, etc.

And now... off to get tires on my car!

Hurricane Who was utterly fantastic and thanks for making my first con so utterly fantastic. I wish I could have done the entire weekend, but law school called and I really couldn't take more time than I did. But I'm glad I got done what I could!

As always, fantastic to see [livejournal.com profile] halfspell, [livejournal.com profile] flyingtonowhere, Shannon and Dexy. ♥

Also was able to meet up with some really amazing folks. The small con was nice, to be honest -- especially because it was easier to hang out and meet up with folks. Got to meet the loverly [livejournal.com profile] kerryblaze as well. ♥ And hung out with [livejournal.com profile] dvcorvis and [livejournal.com profile] veta_black at iHop Saturday night. Even if poor [livejournal.com profile] veta_black got sick.

Of course, have to mention getting to meet the amazingly fabulous [livejournal.com profile] scifichicx who was dressed as dead!Ianto for Saturday. I have to admit, one of my big highlights of the day was getting to do some 're-enactment shots'. They turned out SO awesomely. ♥ However, those I'll post up only if I have her permission to do so. ;^)

I'm still waiting on pictures from Dexy, so once I have them, I'll post 'em up. And my own personal pictures from the Con as well too. Hello flickr, it will be nice to meet you. :^D

I have to say, it was utterly fantastic to meet Gareth David-Lloyd. He's such a nice guy and is wonderful to just listen to as well. Between him doing his John impersonation to the "this is what Panto looks like" were hysterical. And always nice when the canon you have in your head matches up with the actor's.

It was, really, an amazing weekend and I'm so glad I took off. However, we are now back to the daily grind and back to the land of law school. By the way -- I finally broke down and got a twitter. A few bullet points because I'm so fucking tired it isn't funny.

Torchwood Picked up for Series 4.

Good luck, Rusty. Can't wait to see how you're going to pull this one off. And if this is "let's get a new cast + Jack"? I don't know how I feel about it. Yes, I watch for John and I freely admit this point. But I don't want to start watching for a group of new cast members -- why get attached to any of them when you know they're just going to get picked off one at a time?

I just feel like the fandom response... is going to bring out the batshit again. *sigh*

• I will be catching up with all my tags tomorrow. I've officially had 6 (roughly) twelve-hour days down at the theatre. I was supposed to have the day off today. yeah... only, not so much there. I'm fucking exhausted and anything that would come out of Jack's mouth at this point in time would be gibberish.

• Words you never want to hear come out of your mother/boss's mouth: Oh. I didn't realise ComicCon was now. You should have said something. We'd have worked around work to let you go this weekend.

And she wondered why I started crying and banging my head against the cutting table.

• Apparently there was John/David snoggage at SDCC. Photo-evidence anyone? NAO PLZ.

I'm off to bed and attempt to actually get some sleep tonight. ♥
thescarletwoman: (TV // TW :: Jack Good Looking)
The best thing to come out of Torchwood lately? AfterElton's Facebook Recaps. If you haven't seen these yet, check them out. The recaps of the first two series are brilliant.

The link is for the CoE ones. Day Four is fucking PRICELESS.

The Brilliant Quote from Day 4 )

And I'm officially jealous of everyone at SDCC right now. That's all. ♥

I'm... back to the shop. If anyone out there is ever THINKING of doing the Wedding Singer for a show? Just... DON"T. The costumes are in-fucking-sane.

I almost think this is worse than Producers. Going back into the shop on a Saturday is not my idea of a good weekend.
thescarletwoman: (HP // JRK :: Rocks Fall Everyone Dies)
Sorry, Rusty. But you're not Britain's answer to Joss Whedon. And, frankly, coming over here to the States? We already have Joss kthnx.

DigitalSpy interview with Gareth [Spoilers for CoE]

I just... I don't know. There's nothing about this that doesn't suck. And part of me is tired of reading about it (and I'm aware that I'm still writing about it and talking about it. But this is how I deal with things. And really, compared to a lot of the comments lately? I'm tame. But I digress -- to the Irish, life is a digression). This is all I see on [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood lately. And I don't know.

I just want to retcon myself and pretend CoE never existed.

What pisses me off the most is how nasty people are becoming over this. Case in point, the response to the next article at [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood.

TW Boss to Angry Fans: Go watch Supernatural

Just... no. Yes, he's entitled to his opinion and I get that he wrote it. I know what's been going around and I know the opinion of some that if you can't dish it out (IE, the horrible things said to James Moran), then you should be able to take this. Only problem is that whole thing is a small percentage of fans. The rest of us? Give us the benefit of the doubt here.

What I don't like, is the change of format to cater to the BBC1 audience. It was written like Doctor Who and you can tell -- the last two days lose the Torchwood feel IMHO.

New York Times Review.

Amusingly enough? They agree with the fans. ;^) Knew there was a reason I was moving to NYC outside of law school.

AfterElton: Davies Answers the Question

Well, honestly? Duh. Of course he's going to say that. He can't come out and say "oh, well things will be fixed in S4 no worries!" Would I love to know if they'll be fixing things in S4 (or, in my own personal opinion, in one of the final Tenant episodes)? Yes, of course I would. But to have the HOMG aspect of something miraculous happening? Gotta admit, that's where it's at. THAT is drama.

AfterElton: GDL reflects on Torchwood and being one half of Janto

I just want to hug him. I really do. And there is the inconsistency: to say unequivocally no and for another to say 'who knows'? Again, it keeps building the dwama up and keeps people talking about it, which is what they WANT us to be doing.

So that's the articles I've found recently in any case. I do have Richard's opinion on things (very nice having an opinion from a gay male on this and a casual viewer as well) but this post is long enough as it is. So happy I know someone going to SDCC right about now. Who is taking video and will be sharing. XD

1500 words of Kiss Today Goodbye are in the bank! *goes back to writing*

Okay. So.

I'm officially on my way to London to wrap John in bubble wrap before he comes over here for Comic*Con.

Lucky Escape: John Barrowman survives 80mph rally car crash. At least he came through with minor injuries. But geeze. Between his ankle and now this? The guy is having one hell of a summer.

Also! As overheard in the shop. Richard was in today, so of course we have to discus Torchwood. *muttermutter* HOWEVER. funniest way I've heard Day One described yet:

Me: So, what did you think of Day One.
Richard: OMG. It was amazing. And that kiss at the end was SMOKIN' HOT.
Me: Just wait until day two.
Richard: Oh?
Me: [spoiler in case you're that nutsy about knowing nothing] Yes. Bare ass shot. Not to mention full-frontal that's slightly pixellated.
Richard: Oh I am SO buying this DVD.

And then mom almost spoiled him. *headdesk*

No, I didn't watch Day Two. But I watched the last half of Day One yesterday. And didn't throw things either! Aren't you all proud?

Nothing much to report right now. Working on Part Two of Kiss Today Goodbye and cursing [livejournal.com profile] halfspell for giving me yet another idea for an alternate ending to CoE. If anyone's wondering -- yes, I am keeping my DVDs when they come from Barnes & Noble. I will rewatch it when it runs on BBCA and I will re-watch it with [livejournal.com profile] rose_whispers as well.

The good? Seeing a trailer for Nine on Reelz channel tonight. I take back the bitching about it. It looks fucking fantastic!

Hope everyone had a fantastic week!

Also? Dude! When did my friend-of list creep over 400!? *waves to all the new folks!* Hi and welcome!! ♥
